The Charitable Trusts, formerly the Sussex Police Welfare Funds, were established in 1968 to enable police officers and police staff to receive donations and legacies made by members of the public.
Further revenue was generated by member subscriptions enabling the charities to use the monies for limited grants and interest free loans to the police community in times of need, hardship or distress. The charities received a legacy of around £2 million in 1998 which provided an opportunity for the charities to grow and to give more significant help to members. Also as a result of the additional funds the trustees employed professional staff to administer the charity and acquired the bungalow in Dorset. At this time the trustees also set a path to employ staff with specific responsibility to provide help and advice to members on a non-financial basis.
